Expansion Revenue

Expansion revenue is additional recurring revenue generated from an existing customer base — through plan upgrades, add-on purchases, seat or usage growth — as distinct from new revenue from newly acquired customers.

Expansion revenue is what allows net revenue retention to exceed 100%: even if some customers churn or downgrade, sufficient expansion from the remaining base can more than offset that loss, meaning the existing customer base alone grows revenue without any new sales at all.

Companies with strong product-led or usage-based pricing models tend to generate expansion revenue more organically (usage naturally grows with a customer's own success) than companies relying on manual upsell motions, which is one reason usage-based pricing has become popular specifically for its expansion characteristics.
